How to Move a Sofa Safely

Published 10 April 2026 · 5 min read

A sofa is one of the trickiest things to move in any home. It's heavy, oddly shaped, and just large enough to get stuck in a doorway at the worst possible moment. Whether you've bought one second-hand or you're taking your favourite three-seater to a new place, here's how to move it safely and without damage.

Measure first — it saves everything

Before you lift a thing, measure the sofa's height, width and depth, then measure every doorway, hallway and stairwell it needs to pass through. Don't forget to measure the diagonal, because you'll often tip a sofa on its side or angle it to get through. If the numbers are tight, you've just saved yourself a painful afternoon of trial and error.

Protect the sofa and the property

Remove the cushions and any detachable legs or feet first, and bag the fittings so nothing's lost. Wrap the sofa in moving blankets or a sofa cover and secure it with tape or stretch wrap — but never let tape touch fabric directly, as it can pull or stain. Lay down floor protection on routes you'll walk, and consider padding door edges and stair corners where knocks are most likely.

Lift the right way

Two people are far safer than one. Lift with your legs, not your back, keep the load close to your body, and agree clear commands before you move — "lift", "down", "stop". Take it slowly through doorways and around corners, communicating the whole way. If you feel the sofa straining a frame or your grip slipping, set it down and reset rather than forcing it.

Getting through a tight doorway

The classic trick is the "hook": stand the sofa on one end and walk it through the doorway at an angle, rotating it as it passes through. Lead with the back corner and pivot. For very tight Tyneside flat stairwells, sometimes the only safe route is tipping it fully on its side. Patience beats brute force every time.

Loading into the van

In the van, stand the sofa upright or on its end to save floor space, and strap it against the side so it can't tip or slide in transit. Keep the wrapped cushions tucked alongside. A few minutes securing it properly prevents scuffs and tears over every bump in the road.

When to call a man and van

If the sofa is large, the access is awkward, or it's heading up several flights of stairs, a man-and-van service with two people and the right equipment will move it faster and far more safely than risking it yourself. We move sofas, corner suites and recliners every week — including collections from shops and Marketplace sellers — and we bring the blankets, straps and muscle to do it without a mark. If your sofa needs shifting, get a quick quote and let us take the strain.
