The difference between a stressful move and a smooth one usually comes down to planning. Tackle the right jobs at the right time and moving day becomes almost relaxing. Here's a complete, week-by-week house removal checklist you can follow from the moment your date is confirmed.
Six weeks before
This is your decluttering window — and the most valuable thing you can do. Go room by room and be honest about what you actually want to take. Sell, donate or recycle the rest. The less you move, the cheaper and quicker the day will be. This is also the time to book your van and confirm your moving date, especially if it falls on a weekend or at month-end when demand is highest.
Four weeks before
Start collecting boxes and packing materials, and begin packing the things you rarely use: out-of-season clothes, books, spare bedding, the contents of the loft and garage. Label every box with its destination room and a brief note of the contents. Now is also the moment to arrange any time off work and to book any extra help you'll need on the day.
Two weeks before
Notify the key organisations of your move: utilities, broadband, council tax, your bank, the DVLA, the GP and dentist, and anyone who posts you regularly. Set up a Royal Mail redirect to catch anything you miss. Confirm your moving slot, and start running down the freezer and store cupboard so there's less food to transport.
One week before
Pack everything except the essentials. Prepare a clearly labelled "first night" box for each person with toiletries, medicines, chargers, a change of clothes and anything you'll want within reach. Disassemble any furniture you can, bagging and labelling the fixings. Take photos of how electronics are wired so reconnecting is easy. Confirm parking and access at both properties.
The day before
Finish the last of the packing, charge your phone, and set aside the kettle, mugs, tea and snacks for moving day. Defrost the fridge-freezer if it's coming with you. Do a final sweep of cupboards, lofts and sheds. Get a good night's sleep — tomorrow's a big day.
Moving day
Be up and ready before the van arrives. Keep valuables, documents and the first-night box in your own car. Take final meter readings and photograph them. As the van loads, do a last walk-through to check nothing's been left behind. Once you're at the new place, point the team to the right rooms using your labels, check everything's arrived, and settle up. Then put the kettle on — you've earned it.
After the move
In the first few days, register with a local GP if you've moved area, update your address on anything you missed, and take a little time to find your way around. Unpack the essentials first and let the rest happen at your own pace.
